Puerto Rico combines a 500-year-old colonial city with real wilderness. Old San Juan's blue cobblestones lead to the massive forts of El Morro and San Cristóbal, while an hour east, El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System.

For US citizens it's a domestic trip with no passport needed. The offshore islands of Vieques and Culebra add bioluminescent bays and some of the Caribbean's best beaches.

Top things to do

  • Walk the ramparts of Castillo San Felipe del Morro
  • Hike to waterfalls in El Yunque
  • Kayak the bioluminescent Mosquito Bay on Vieques
  • Swim at Flamenco Beach on Culebra
  • Eat mofongo and lechón along the Ruta del Lechón
