Island-hopping in the Caribbean is easiest where islands sit close together and ferries run daily. These routes work well.

1. The Virgin Islands

Fly into St Thomas, ferry to St John, then cross to Tortola and Virgin Gorda in the BVI. Bring your passport for the border.

2. St Martin, Anguilla and St Barths

Base yourself on St Martin and take day ferries to Anguilla and St Barths.

3. The French Antilles

Fast ferries link Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique and Saint Lucia, a superb two-week route.

4. The ABC Islands

Short flights connect Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire, and Curaçao links on to Cartagena.

5. Cross over to the mainland

Pair the Caymans or Cuba with the Riviera Maya, or Belize with Mexico's coast.

Tip: keep at least one buffer night before a long-haul flight home. Regional schedules change and ferries cancel in rough seas.
