Where a car is worth it
A car pays off on islands with spread-out sights: Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Driving on the left
Traffic drives on the left in Jamaica, Barbados, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands, Antigua, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago. Most other islands drive on the right.
Good to know
- Some islands require a local driving permit, issued by the rental desk for a small fee.
- Mountain roads are steep and narrow: allow extra time.
- Check insurance excess and whether gravel roads are covered.
- Book early for Christmas and Easter.
